Thick fog caused the temporary closure of Timanfaya’s Fire Mountains yesterday and for much of Tuesday.

Staff at the National Park turned visitors away in the morning because they were aware that the tourists wouldn’t see much. “It makes no sense to let them in because this is a visual experience.”

There were also safety worries about low visibility on the coach tour of the Ruta de los Volcanes and the geyser display.

Many of Lanzarote’s peaks have been wreathed in mist over the last two days, which results from condensation that arises when cold Atlantic air meets warm humid air. While the island has experienced one of the coolest winters for years, owing to cold fronts from the North Atlantic, the last two days have been the warmest for several weeks, with temperatures reaching 27 degrees Celsius at the airport yesterday.

The outlook of the next few days remains good, with plenty of sunshine and only a low chance of light showers on Friday. At the moment, the forecast for Arrecife’s big carnival procession on Monday evening is excellent.
