Arrecife’s municipal bus service is set to surpass 600,000 passengers this year, following another annual rise. Guaguas Urbanas recorded 582,395 passengers in 2025 – a 4% increase on the previous year’s total of 560,352, according to Diario de Lanzarote.

In both 2024 and 2025, October proved the busiest month, coinciding with the return of students to schools and vocational training centres.

Mayor Yonathan de León’s administration is driving forward a five-million-euro modernisation of the fleet. The investment, he says, will enable more frequent services, shorter waiting times and more efficient routes.

“We are committed to a modern, sustainable and accessible public transport system for all residents and visitors,” the mayor said.

Four new electric buses, each with capacity for 75 passengers (seated and standing), will enter service in the coming weeks. They will be followed by two further units at the end of the year, following a tender process concluded last autumn. The new arrivals bring the total number of electric buses introduced under the current administration to eight; the first two were launched in December 2024.

In anticipation of the expanded service, Arrecife Ayuntamiento has opened a public recruitment process for bus drivers. The call, designed to strengthen the workforce ahead of the new lines and additional vehicles, remains open until 5 March.
