Spain’s air force has installed a cutting-edge radar installation at Penas del Chache, the highest point on Lanzarote.

The LANZA LMM system, named because Lanzarote is the first place where it has been installed, replaces the Italian radar system that has operated for over 20 years and whose spherical shape is familiar to many islanders on the clifftop of Famara.

The 22nd Air Vigilance Squadron, which has had a presence at Penas del Chache for over 50 years, , presented the new radar on Friday, calling it “a huge leap in quality that will improves vigilance and the defence of Canarian air space.”

The radar will provide assistance for civil aircraft as well as military forces.
