The highly anticipated Performing Arts Festival, Escena Lanzarote, is set to begin its fifth edition, launching a season dedicated to theatre, dance, and the performing arts across the island.

This unmissable event invites audiences to rediscover the unique spaces of Lanzarote’s Art, Culture, and Tourism Centres through an exciting programme. The festival opens Saturday, 29th November, at the Jameos del Agua Auditorium with the show, ‘DIQUE’, from the Nova Galega de Danza company.

‘DIQUE’ is a stunning creation that masterfully fuses dance, music, and visual arts. The piece is inspired by the true, forgotten story of the more than 200 women who dug the Dique de la Campana de Ferrol between 1874 and 1879, one of the greatest hydraulic engineering works of 19th century Spain.

These workers, known as ‘estibadoras’, carried thousands of baskets of earth and stone on their heads, performing the same labour as the men but for less pay. Based on this history, Nova Galega de Danza has created a tribute to resistance, sisterhood, and female empowerment, blending traditional Galician dance with a contemporary language that is a hallmark of the company.

The piece is directed by Jaime Pablo Díaz, with stage direction by Marta Pazos, and features an artistic and technical team made up entirely of women. The result is a visually and emotionally powerful performance that explores themes of collective effort through a striking combination of colours, textures, and contrasts.

A Complete Cultural Experience

Audiences are encouraged not to miss this opportunity to experience ‘DIQUE’, a piece that combines art, history, and raw emotion within the incomparable setting of Jameos del Agua.

To prolong the evening, attendees can purchase a combined ticket with a pairing, offering a chance to savour the essence of Lanzarote while discussing the powerful performance. Furthermore, a special youth ticket is available for anyone aged 25 or under, making this unique show accessible at a reduced rate.

It promises to be a night to feel, celebrate, and share the compelling power of contemporary Galician dance.
