The German Travel Agents association (DRV) has confirmed that strong demand continues for Canarian winter holidays among German tourists, while expressing concerns that economic stagnation is reducing spending at destination.
While the Balearics, and in particular Mallorca, remain the most popular summer destination among Germans, the Canaries continue to lead the field in winter breaks. The DRV claims that the economic situation means that “German tourists are very price-conscious” and claims that this has also increased summer bookings to cheaper destinations such as Tunisia, Bulgaria and Egypt.
The association also indicates that All Inclusive (AI) packages are increasingly popular, especially among families. This coincides with a general decrease in tourist spending on activities at destination, such as excursions and visits to restaurants.
All Inclusive is often preferred by holiday makers on a budget because the holiday is ready organised and easier to budget in advance, and the DRV claims that the prevalence of AI holidays in Turkey and Egypt are part of the reason behind their popularity.
Another form of AI holiday – cruising – has also experienced an 8% increase in booking among German customers.
German wallets are also being affected by the high cost of flights. A recent report by the Mabrian Technologies company claims that the average price of flights from Germany to Lanzarote is €313, 13% higher than last year and more than double the average price on British or Irish routes. The rising cost of living and a sluggish economy are not just affecting German tourists, however, and decreased tourist spending is becoming an increasing concern for many Spanish destinations. Lanzarote registered a year-on-year fall of around €30 million in spring 2025, despite the arrival of 35,000 more tourists.
