The European Commission has backed airlines in their action against the Spanish government, whose Consumer Department has issued fines to various airlines for charging passengers for hand luggage.
The EC has “supported the freedom of airlines to set charges for their services”, claimed a representative of the ALA (Airlines Association), adding that it would be taking legal action against Spain to withdraw fines.
The ALA also said that the European Court of Justice has found in favour of airlines that issue charges for hand luggage that exceeds size or weight limits. They claim this also falls within the airlines’ right to freely set prices.
