The Mayor of Tías and Haría have criticised the Cabildo after it failed to be considered for €20 million of EU development funds

The Cabildo’s application was recently turned down by Spain’s Tax Department, and although the Cabildo will appeal the decision, it appears likely that the funds that would have been shared among the seven island municipalities will not materialise.

Haría Mayor Alfredo Villalba said “The Cabildo withdrew the Municipal Cooperation Plan and promised a new source of finance that never materialized. Now, Haría finds itself without financial support and our residents will suffer the consequences.”

His fellow Socialist Mayor in Tías, José Juan Cruz, repeated the sentiments, pointing out that a separate application for funds by his council had been successful. Tías Deputy Mayor Nicolas Saavedra said, “We have those funds because we did the work.”
