The Canarian Supreme Court has rejected a request by the company that wished to continue operating the fish farms located off the coast of Playa Quemada.

The Yaizatun company had applied to extend its operating licence so that it could continue to farm sea bass and dorada in the underwater net cages.

The fish farms were closed down in 2023 by ex-Cabildo President María Dolores Corujo after the expiry of its operating licence and several allegations that the fish farms were causing environmental damage to the waters and shores of Playa Quemada.

Corujo’s Socialist party greeted the court’s decision and praised the actions of Yaiza Council and its Mayor Óscar Noda in preparing reports and objections to the fish farms.  “Co-operation between island constitutions was key to winning this decision,” a press release said.
