Lanzarote’s Socialists have demanded an apology from Arrecife Mayor Yonathan de León, who claimed that “sexually abusing women in brothels was intrinsic to the Socialist party” during a council meeting last week.

De León’s comments came after the Socialists proposed a motion marking the international day against sexual violence and referred to current cases in which two prominent socialist politicians are accused of having visited prostitutes, as well as a chain of saunas owned by the father-in-law of Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.

After the comments, Socialist councillors walked out of the meeting in protest. Echedey Eugenio, as Coalición Canaria (CC) representative in the ruling pact with De León’s PP, later expressed support for De León’s statements.

Socialists say the PP and CC are “promoting a hate campaign based on lies, personal attacks and slander” and say they are considering legal action.
