A windmill next to the Castillo de San José will be renovated at a cost of €80,000.

The windmill was once used to pump water to the long-abandoned salt works that can still be seen across the road from the castle, and overlooks Puerto del Los Marmoles and the Playa de Arena.

The CEPAL group, who have already renovated a windmill at Janubio, have been granted the contract to carry out the works, which should take six months.

“We can’t turn our backs on our history,” stated CACTs councillor Ángel Vázquez. “We have the duty and responsibility to protect and preserve our heritage so that our sons and daughters can learn about the history of Arrecife; discover the traditional ways of life of their ancestors and how sea and salt transformed the coast of what is now the island’s capital.”
