44 brown biowaste containers have so far been installed in Puerto del Carmen as Tías Ayuntamiento continues to pioneer the disposal of organic matter.
Organic waste collection is the responsibility of the Ayuntamientos, and Tías has focused on establishments which produce large amounts of biowaste. The THB Flora hotel is the latest to join a list which already features the Beatriz Playa, Costa Sal, Sol Lanzarote, Lava Beach, Aequora Lanzarote, Los Jameos Playa, Floresta, La Geria, Riu Paraíso, Lanzarote Village, Hyde Park Lane, Las Costas, San Antonio, Relaxia Olivina, Aqua Suite, Fariones, Casas Heddy, La Isla y el Mar, Costa Mar, Morromar, Puerto Carmen, 5 Plazas, Plus Fariones and Gloria Ízaro.
Brown containers are also located at Rancho Texas and the Colegio Hispano Británico.
The next phase of the project is to provide restaurants with brown containers, before finally extending them to the general population.
Biowaste is treated at the Environmental Complex at Zonzamas, where it is used to generate biogas (the complex is self-sufficient in power), and where a composting facility is planned for next year.
