This Monday, the Lanzarote Cabildo presented a program of events to commemorate International Dog Day with scheduled activities across Lanzarote.

Cabildo Councilor for Animal Welfare, Armando Santana, emphasised the importance of promoting responsible animal ownership, during the presentation. “It is essential that we continue to generate spaces for reflection, information and participation that help to reinforce a respectful coexistence with our pets. This first week dedicated to dogs in Lanzarote and La Graciosa also wants to be an invitation to all citizens to get involved, and we are deeply grateful to NGOs such as SARA or LanzaAnimal for the tireless work they do on our island in favour of animal welfare”, Santana stated.

Santana detailed how the program includes informative talks, educational workshops and itinerant murals, in a bid to raise awareness from an early age and from different formats. The councillor also recalled that there are currently over 40,000 registered dogs in Lanzarote. “Fighting animal abandonment, encouraging volunteering and adoption, and turning Lanzarote and La Graciosa into exemplary territories in animal welfare policies are shared objectives that unite us and guide us on this path,” he stressed.

For his part, Teguise Ayuntamiento’s Councilor for Animal Welfare, Ginés González, expressed his intention to continue supporting initiatives like this, “which not only raise awareness,” he said, “but also promote values of respect and responsibility. We invite all citizens to participate in these days and to approach the municipal shelters where there are many dogs waiting for a second chance and a home”.
