Last Sunday, the maritime procession as part of the fiestas in honour of the Virgin of Carmen was held in Playa Blanca, which saw more than fifty boats and hundreds of spectators positioned along the town seafront.

This weekend residents of Playa Blanca took to the streets to participate in the Virgen del Carmen celebrations. Despite the summer heat, many residents and visitors made for a busy day with plenty of cheer.

Over 50 boats escorted the “Simaraca” – the boat commissioned to bring the Virgen to the coast – where she was then brought to the town and escorted around.

Chanting the name of the Virgen del Carmen, the crowd danced and enjoyed the musical performances on offer.

Finally, the town prayed with the parish priest, Jonathan Almeida.

The party continued in the Plaza with musical performances by Los Aseres and Iván Cacú and his orchestra.

WHEN WILL PUERTO DEL CARMEN CELEBRATE?

Puerto del Carmen celebrates later – in the first two weeks of August.

As usual, the Plaza del Varadero in the old town will be the main scene of events, with a wide range of events ranging from children’s playback (mime) contests to Canarian wrestling, scuba diving and the regatta of jolateros (small tin boats).

There’ll be live music from several artists including Canarian reggaeton stars K- Narias and Puerto Rican Tony Tun Tun. Folk music is also scheduled and the usual fiesta orquestas will be getting the crowds going at the verbenas (open air dances).

The maritime procession, in which the image of the Virgin is taken to the harbour and paraded on a fishing boat, will take place at 12 midday on Saturday 9th August, while the street procession will be on Sunday 10th at 7 pm.
