Tonight’s Procesión del Encuentro in Arrecife is one of the most important Easter events on Lanzarote.
The processions of worshippers carrying images of holy figures are an essential part of Spanish Easter celebrations, and although Lanzarote’s celebrations are not as elaborate as those in cities such as Seville or Zamaora, they can still be a moving spectacle.
The Procession of the Encounter begins at 8pm in the Plaza de San Ginés in Arrecife, as the image of Jesus Christ is removed from the church and paraded around the town. Shortly afterwards, the image of the Virgin Mary is taken out on a different route. Both images are accompanied by solemn music played by municipal bands.
Finally, the two images meet face-to-face in the Plazuela, where a devoted silence is observed and a sermon delivered.
