The future of Lanzarote’s water supplier remains uncertain, as Canarias 7 has reported that the current operator, Canal Gestión appears to be preparing to hand responsibilities over to another company.

Representatives of three large companies are reported to have visited the desalination plant in recent weeks, according to employees at the plant, although the Cabildo has not officially recognised the visits.

Any transfer of responsibilities would require the approval of the island’s Water Consortium and the Insular Water Council, composed of representatives from the Cabildo and the island’s seven municipalities. . Relations between the Cabildo and Canal Gestión have deteriorated since President Oswaldo Betancort accused the Madrid-owned company of serious breaches of contract earlier this year.
