The draw for the Copa del Rey was held on October 10th at the Spanish Football Headquarters (RFEF) in Madrid, and fifth-tier Lanzarote were drawn at home against the leaders of the second tier of Spanish football Real Racing de Santander.
The Copa Del Rey is Spain’s biggest cup tournament, equivalent to England’s F.A. Cup, and a competition where dreams can come true. U.D. Lanzarote´s history in the Copa has been sensational over the years, beating Primera Liga sides Athletic Bilbao, CD Tenerife and RCD Mallorca and narrowly losing to Real Madrid, Sevilla and Atlético Madrid. This article went to press before the match had been played on the 29th of October so to see the result look on website etc, (details below).
The Rojillos history in this competition is glorious but they are facing a side that is in tremendous form leading the Segunda A (Championship) by four points. Lanzarote fans will hope that Racing’s main focus is promotion to La Liga, but even if they rest a few players, they will be replaced from their rich, deep squad all of whom are eager to impress their manager José Alberto López. One might have hoped that they don’t travel well but they have won all their matches away from home this season.
Lanzarote´s league form in the RFEF 3 has taken a nosedive. The season began with two wins but in their following four league games they have taken just three points and have slipped out of the play-off positions to 7th spot.
The away match on the 12th of October against 13th-placed side UD Tamaraceite pretty much sums things up. The Rojillos were leading 0-1 in the 95th minute and looked certain to claim all three points but three minutes later they were 2-1 down and all they took home with them was a frown on their faces.
All Lanzarote´s home matches are being played at the stadium in Tías whilst renovation work takes place in Arrecife. Go onto the website below for details on how to get there, tickets, etc. The Rojillos expect to return to Ciudad Deportiva stadium early in the New Year.
