QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS?

Dear Gazette,

I have read that starting soon, hotels will have to record answers to 43 questions when new tourists arrive. Each year we stay in the apartment of a friend (a private apartment, not a commercial one). Does he have to do this, and if so, how? Although he owns the apartment, he lives in the UK and is now worried enough that we might not be able to come, even though we have booked flights. I can find no answers online – can you help?

John Jackson, Via Email

Ed: The new law requiring 43 pieces of information has been withdrawn, and only 14 pieces of information are required for hotels or holiday lets, as has been the case up to now. However, even as a non-paying guest, the owner is recommended to register your stay with police.

PUBLIC INCONVENIENCE

Dear Gazette,

Does anyone know who is in charge of Las Cucharas beach toilets. They have been disgusting for many years. There are new ones near the shopping mall too, but they have never been opened!! They should pay an attendant to clean and remain on site.

Edwina

Ed: It’s not the only beach where the toilets could be better cared for, Edwina. It seems amazing that this situation still persists on Lanzarote’s beaches – its most important tourist attractions – year after year.

WHEELCHAIR ADVICE

Dear Ed,

I have just read the letters in October magazine and feel one of your contributors should be reassured. Robin Mc Culloch is concerned about the passport check queues with a wheelchair user. If he books assistance, they will avoid any queues and be fast tracked through with the Assistance helper…also to the front of the taxi queue if that is what they want.

Yours, Lynn Claxton

MAKE HOTELS PAY

Hi,

I well understand the protests by locals about excess tourism, but I note it’s excess tourism rather than simply excess tourists. Granting permissions for monstrosities such as Hotel Barceló in Playa Blanca, which draws in thousands for cheap inclusive holidays, while failing to require the hotel to make provision for staff accommodation, is crazy.

The Barceló is continuing to advertise for staff. It simply can’t get them.

The island council want a ‘better’ class of tourist, but they don’t use their powers to make that happen. Require hotels to provision for their staff, force them to charge visitors appropriately instead of relying on the state to effectively subsidise them.

COSTA TEGUISE BANKSY?

Hi,

I came across these murals in Costa Teguise. Is there a Lanzarote Banksy working in the resort?

Yours, Brian Bannister
