Union Sur Yaiza have got off to flying start playing at the highest level in their history. César Martinez reports.
Union Sur Yaiza secured promotion to Group 5 of the Spanish Segunda RFEF division in June’s play-offs, and their start to the season in which they’ll be playing at a higher level than ever before couldn’t have gone better. The southern side celebrated their first match in the division with a 2-1 victory against Toledo-based team Illescas.
A week later came the first of what will be many gruelling flights to the mainland for a showdown with Extremadura’s CD Coria. Whether the journey took its toll is up for debate, but the home side snatched a 1-0 victory.
But it was back to winning ways at the Municipal Stadium in Yaiza the following week as Yaiza hosted Navalcarnero, from Madrid.
The home side played a tough, serious game on the pitch, without cracks in defence and efficient in attack. It was Joel Domínguez’s goal at the start of the second half that secured three more points for Yaiza.
The 1-0 win was Unión Sur Yaiza’s second victory of the season in the RFEF. Three points that saw them sitting comfortably at sixth place in the league, and which will contribute to the reputation of the Municipal de Yaiza as a fortress.
By the time you read this, Yaiza will have headed to Getafe in Madrid to take on their ‘B’ team, and will also be playing in Africa for the first time in October, with a match in the Spanish enclave of Melilla on the 20th.
