Today is a national holiday in Spain to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
As the date falls on a Thursday, it will also form a “puente” (bridge), meaning that many people will take the Friday off work to have a long weekend. The Assumption also marks the start of many Spanish families’ summer holiday.
As a result, you’ll find that many official buildings and offices will be closed, along with most smaller establishments in the non-tourist areas of Lanzarote.
Large shopping centres and many shops, bars and restaurants in the resorts are likely to remain open.
In La Geria, the small church next to Bodegas La Gería will also celebrate the feast day of Our lady of Charity, with traditional grape harvesting and wine treading.
On Friday, Tinajo celebrates its Fiestas de San Roque with a solemn procession at 7 pm, followed by a verbena (open air dance) from 10.30 pm till 2 am.
