A group from Spain’s Geological institute has discovered a new underwater mountain composed of three volcanoes to the east of Lanzarote.
The mountain has been named Los Atlantes, after the Atlantis project that discovered it, and one of its peaks may be related to the volcanic eruptions of Timanfaya in 1730.
The Atlantis project has already established the existence of “grandmother” volcanoes situated underwater to the south of the Canaries. The new peak is described as a “mother” peak, which was an island itself.
“These were islands in the past and they have sunk. Some of us have confirmed that they still maintain their beaches,” said project coordinator Luis Somoza.
Some of the lava flows of the volcanoes are 1,200 metres in height, with impressive underwater tunnels.
