The island’s firefighters were called to three fires yesterday afternoon and early this morning, two in Arrecife and one in Nazaret.

Despite a number of arrests related to the frequent rubbish bin fires on Lanzarote, the fires continue to pop up in various municipalities. Arrecife suffers the most from rubbish container fires.

It should be noted that each container destroyed costs the Ayuntamiento’s 1,200 to replace. In March this year, Arrecife Ayuntamiento, revealed that they had spent 30,000 euros on rubbish bin replacements so far in 2024.

Yesterday, fire fighters were called to an abandoned building on calle Tenderete in Arrecife. Upon arrival they found that rubbish and household items had been set on fire.

Some hours later, they were called to a fire on calle Timón also in Arrecife. Upon arrival they found that an organic waste container had been set on fire.

Lastly, the third fire was reported in the early hours of this morning, fire fighters were called to calle Perdices in Nazaret. Upon arrival they found that a fire was burning two organic waste containers.

All fires were safely extinguished, and no injuries were reported.
