The Cabildo has closed the Albergue de La Santa, the hostel that was being used to accommodate young unaccompanied migrants on the island.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort announced that the action has been taken with the support of the Canarian Government, given that “the facilities do not meet even the most minimal living or safety conditions”.
Welfare councillor Marci Acuna said that the closure of the hostel had been possible “due to the creation of new, reception centres across the island which can offer the care these young people need.”
The hostel had become increasingly controversial in recent months, with several instances of violence and vandalism within the centre, and tensions between locals and the residents.
The hostel will be renovated and returned to its original purpose, as a base for school outings and other youth activities.
