Calls have increased for the closure of the Albergue (Hostel) at La Santa after several incidents of vandalism and violence.
The hostel is currently being used to accommodate 35 young unaccompanied migrants who have arrived on boats from the African coast. In recent days a stabbing has resulted in one youth being taken to hospital, and a mattress has been burned.
Five workers at the hotel have been suspended for allegedly menacing young inmates into causing trouble.
Sources report that, while most of the young people at the hostel are peaceful, “four or five” have caused repeated problems, with distinct gangs forming.
Tinajo Mayor Jesús Machín has once again called for the closure of the hostel, which was originally used as a centre for school outings.
Visiting the hostel, Cabildo Welfare councillor Marci Acuña said, “Our priority is to seek solutions that will end the serious situation that has developed in the hostel.” No response has yet been given by the Canarian Government or the Spanish state.
