Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda has proposed the purchase of properties on Montaña Roja to address the housing crisis in southern Lanzarote.

Noda pointed out that there more than 200 unsold homes in Montaña Roja and proposed that the Canarian Government purchase them to be rented out immediately.

Permission has been granted for 126 social houses in Playa Blanca, but Noda pointed out that this would take at least two years to complete. Converting the existing private properties into social housing would also take time, so Noda has proposed that the properties be purchased and let privately “for a low or reasonable rent.”

Playa Blanca is currently suffering acute housing problems. Property prices and rents in the resort are among the highest on the island, far beyond reach of many of the workers who work in the tourist industry or public sector.
