Uga residents have protested at the demolition of a wall outside the church of San Isidro Labrador.
A protest of around 50 people gathered outside the church yesterday to complain of the “unilateral decision” of the council to demolish the wall. They claim the action is one of several that has been carried out without the knowledge or consent of locals.
In response to recent criticism, Yaiza Ayuntamiento has issued a statement saying that the demolition was “part of a plan of corrective actions aimed at improving accessibility, lighting and the renewal of infrastructure in public buildings and their surroundings…The main objective in the Plaza de Uga is to eliminate architectural barriers and revitalize green areas to more effectively integrate the church into its surroundings.”
Yaiza pointed out that the late-70s square was one of many public spaces that were now “obsolete” due to the deterioration of materials and their failure to meet modern accessibility standards.
