The Travesia A Nado El Rio, the famous swimming contest across El Rio, the strait between Lanzarote and La Graciosa, has been suspended by the Cabildo.
496 swimmers from eight different countries had expected to head to La Graciosa to take part in the race on Saturday; however, a yellow alert for rough seas that may cause waves of up to four metres in height was issued by Spain’s AEMET agency, and the Cabildo suspended the race.
This is the fourth time the race has been cancelled in the last five years. Rough weather also led to a cancellation in 2019, and the pandemic put paid to the contest in 2020 and 2021. Last year’s race was won by Costa Teguise swimmer Kennedy Denby, who beat all other male and female swimmers over the 2,600-metre open water course in a time of 33 minutes and 5 seconds.
