Socialist councillors on Lanzarote’s Cabildo have proposed a daily limit on visitors to la Graciosa.

Councillor Ariagona González said that half a million visitors had sailed to the “eighth Canary Island” in a year, meaning that at times there were 428 tourists on the island for each inhabitant. The situation, she claimed, is “unsustainable”.

The councillors proposed setting a maximum number of visitors daily, and “improving the experience” of those who visited. González also suggested that the island could follow the example of Venice, which recently introduced a tax of €5 for every visitor not spending the night in the city.
