The Cabildo has announced that two desalination plants will arrive on the island in the next few days.

The installations were located on the island of La Palma, where they were used to provide water for irrigation during the volcanic eruption of two years ago. They will be brought to the Diaz Rijo desalination centre, between Arrecife and Costa Teguise, and will produce 5,000 cubic metres of water a day.

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said “Water shortages on Lanzarote and La Graciosa have become a real risk, especially in the periods of maximum tourist occupation on the island, so the transfer of these portable desalination plants is the only short-term guarantee to avoid shortages and tackle the utter neglect of water management in Lanzarote and La Graciosa”.
