Lanzarote’s housing crisis continues to negatively affect businesses on the island.

In  a recent interview on RTVE, the head of hospitality association Hostelán, Cristobal Sánchez, said that lack of housing was one of the main reasons behind the difficulty of hiring waiters and cooks. “If this is sorted out, the problems will end,” he said.

Sánchez pointed out that  renting a flat on Lanzarote was now as expensive as on Ibiza, and that many properties were being used as holiday lets.

Meanwhile, Naomi Hernández of the VitalOcio company has told La Voz de Lanzarote that lifeguards are unwilling to work in certain hotels because of inadequate housing and public transport. “It mostly happening Playa Blanca,”  she said. “Qualified personnel do not want to work there because the buses are often full and fail to pick passengers up.”
