The Canary Island’s first all-women carnival group, Las Revoltosas, and Los Buches, the oldest traditional group of Arrecife’s carnival, have been awarded the Gold Medal by the Canarian Government.
Las Revoltosas are a murga (singing group) who were formed in the early 80s in San Bartolomé. While Los Buches are a group who dress as fishermen, wearing net masks and brandishing the inflated swim bladders of fish. Both groups were prominent in the carnival parades of a few weeks ago.
They will receive their award on Canary Day, the 30th of May.
