This book honors the Majos, the indigenous people of the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The Majos are no longer a separate people. Their DNA survives among today’s citizens of Lanzarote, the conejeros , the informal name for the island’s inhabitants, whose modern customs preserve elements of the Majo language and culture.

Thank you, Alejandro, our guide and driver, who enlightened us in the culture and history of the island of Lanzarote.
Local Seneca author Michael Ponzio has released his ninth historical fiction novel, titled The Fortunate Islands: A Novel of the 14th Century Canary Islands.
With plenty of action, the tale is about a family who journeys across the Mediterranean and Atlantic on a merchant ship, facing both thrilling and perilous adventures. Esmeray, a Greek fisherman's daughter, commands the ship while she and her husband, Bastone, a Genoese crossbowman, lead their crew fending off pirates. Their daughter Aspasia, who begins as the cabin boy, grows into a skilled sailor and earns the crew's respect.
The novel The Fortunate Islands is the third volume of the Lover of the Sea series; however, its story stands alone and the novel can be enjoyed without reading the first two novels of the series.
