The wheelchairs, similar to those in use on other beaches in Lanzarote%u2019s resorts, will allow bathers with limited mobility to enjoy the sea at the beach. The equipment will be operated by REN, the company in charge of lifesaving services on the beach.Residents of la Graciosa have launched a petition demanding action to tackle the increasing number of feral cats on the islandThe petition says %u201cMany cats live in the streets that are unsterilised, that have no health checks and with no licences granted to feed them properly.%u201d The residents claim that not only does this damage the welfare of the colony of feral cats, but also threatens local birds and causes annoyance for residents. The petition calls for Teguise Ayuntamiento to take immediate action, either via a mass catchneuter-release scheme, and/or creating a supervised shelter on the island.Teguise%u2019s Animal Welfare Councillor, Gin%u00e9s Gonz%u00e1lez, claims that a previous sterilisation campaign in July 2024 was halted by a complaint from the Canarian Government%u2019s Environmental Department and, although the Ayuntamiento wishes to continue sterilisations, the legal situation needs to be clarified.ACCESS LA GARITALA GRACIOSA CAT PETITIONREDUCTO CLOSED FOR WEEKS Arrecife%u2019s city beach, Playa Reducto, remained closed to bathers for much of October and November after sewage was detected in the water.Original investigations suggested that the source of the contamination was an outflow located at Punto Camellos, the headland near the Cabildo and the bus interchange. However, tests now seem to show that a sewage pipe beneath the promenade has broken, leading to a The C%u00e9sar Manrique Foundation last month called for the removal of advertisements from the grounds of Lanzarote Airport, labelling them a form of visual pollution that betrays the island%u2019s long-standing aesthetic principles. The foundation said that it is %u201cinexplicable%u201d that the airport would permit the advertising, which %u201cseriously contravene the style and wishes of C%u00e9sar Manrique and distorts the Lanzarote brand%u201d.An advertising post on the roundabout where one of Manrique%u2019s wind toys once stood is an example of what the foundation claim is a betrayal of Manrique%u2019s principles. They have called on the airport to reconsider immediately.NO ADS AT AIRPORT GROUNDSseepage of sewage beneath the sand on the beach.%u201cIt%u2019s all underground. That%u2019s why we couldn%u2019t detect it,%u201d said Domingo Cejas of the Lanzarote Water Consortium. If this is the case, it is likely that excavations will have to take place along the seafront to repair the problem, putting a damper on the festive aspect of the recentlypedestrianised promenade. The beach will not be reopened until the problem is addressed and tests confirm the safety of the water.
