28 | Gazette Life | May 2026GAZETTE | BEAUTYThe Lanza look is, above all, informal, defined by the sunshine and warmth of a sub-tropical island. It%u2019s also unfussy, as the active lifestyle here demands that clothes be practical as well as attractive. Accessorising is vital, with sunglasses one of the items you simply can%u2019t do without. Lanzarote also has a strong artistic, bohemian current, most visible at places such as Teguise%u2019s Sunday market. You%u2019ll find a lot of tat on sale, but you%u2019ll also find plenty of genuinely creative designers, jewellers and other artisans offering unique items that encapsulate the freedom and beauty of the island. Fierce sunshine means that loose, easy-fitting items are ideal, and natural, undyed shades are as popular as bright, eye-catching colours and patterns. Sport is a strong influence, with the laid-back yet bold and vivid surf styles hugely popular among young locals. If you want an idea of the latest trends in beachwear, just take a look at younger islanders on the beaches. The pareo is a perfect example of Lanzarote%u2019s beach style. The word comes from Tahiti and describes a large square of brightly patterned cotton fabric which can be worn in a wide variety of ways.Pareos can be worn as dresses, as maxi- or miniskirts, as strapless tops, over-the-shoulder wraps or tied around the head. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination, and as they are usually fairly cheap, they%u2019re an item that should never be far from your beach bag. Another foreign import that has become a Lanzarote standard is the pamela. In Spain the word %u201cpamela%u201d is still used for wide-brimmed sun hats, often made of straw. This goes back to the 18th century, when a French actress popularised the style when portraying the heroine of Samuel Richardon%u2019s novel %u201cPamela%u201d on stage.Wide-brimmed palm-woven hats are also, of course, one of the most famous items of Lanzarote traditional dress, available in the distinctive bucket-shaped style of La Graciosa, or the broader brimmed hats of the main island. Hand-woven hats are expensive, but offer an absolutely distinctive and timeless look.the Lanzarote look Lanzarote has developed a dress style all of its own, one that%u2019s perfectly suited to the casual, outdoor lifestyle of the island, but which can also be adapted to almost any occasion.Pamelas and Pareos%u201cLanza style is casual, practical and cool%u201d
