August 2025 | Gazette Life | 7Members of the Vox party have called the removal of a cross in Arrecife%u2019s Plaza de las Palmas %u201can attack on Christianity%u201d.The Manrique-designed square is currently being renovated and the cross that stood directly opposite the door of the San Gin%u00e9s church has been taken away in order to comply with the Law Of Historical Memory, which requires the removal of Franco-era monuments. The cross was erected by the Falange, the only political party permitted under Franco%u2019s dictatorship, in tribute to around 50 islanders who died fighting for the fascist side in the Civil War. Vox councillors have avoided any mention of the link to Franco, calling the cross %u201cpart of our identity and our culture.%u201dSupporters of the removal of the cross have called it a %u201cclearly political monument that glorifies the military coup against democracy.%u201d They also point out that it did not feature in C%u00e9sar Manrique's original plans for the square.A resident of Charco del Palo is being investigated by the Guardia Civil after several complaints of his dogs running wild and killing other pets.Other residents in the village complain that dogs belonging to the man are allowed to run free, and that they have attacked and killed at least four cats and one dog and threatened a resident who managed to take refuge in his home. The Guardia Civil%u2019s SEPRONA department has taken testimony and evidence and submitted its report to the courts in Arrecife and the environmental prosecutor. In an unrelated incident, another dog owner is also facing investigation CROSS CONTROVERSYDOGS RUN WILDCRUISE SCHEDULE PUBLISHEDArrecife is expecting another busy cruise season, after publication of the schedule for September 2025 to May 2026.A total of 352 stops are currently expected, a handful more than last season%u2019s total of 347.
