August 2025 | Gazette Life | 3ContentsEd's letterAugust is a family month on Lanzarote. In July and September, most visitors here are adults, but once the summer holidays arrive, the beaches and resorts are packed with people of all ages, as thousands of families make the most of their time on the island. It%u2019s also a time when local kids are off school and often involved in summer camps and leisure activities, while many younger adults return to the island to spend a month or two with their families and friends before returning to work or college. That family atmosphere can often be seen at its best in the local fiestas that take place all over the island, mainly in the summer months. The religious events, such as the pilgrimages and solemn processions, are mainly attended by adults, but there are always plenty of other concerts, dances and shows where all ages gather. The atmosphere at a local fiesta is unique. It%u2019s a place where you%u2019ll see elderly people happily chatting in specially provided seats and adults drinking ca%u00f1as(beers) or cubatas (rum and coke) and dancing to the relentlessly cheerful sounds of a fiesta band playing versions of latin pop hits, Around the edges you%u2019ll see teenagers hanging out in their gangs or flirting and a bunch of small children running wild and having the time of their lives. There%u2019s noise, laughter, loud conversation, music, the hum of the generators on a food truck, the aroma of grilled meat and fish, flashing lights and always the welcoming, exciting warmth of a Lanzarote summer night. In August you%u2019ll find fiestas like this in Arrecife, in Puerto del Carmen%u2019s old town, Tinajo, Nazaret, Playa Honda San Bartolom%u00e9 and %u00d3rzola, and they%u2019ll carry on in September at Famara, Punta Mujeres, Yaiza and Teguise. There are certain times and places in August when Lanzarote really does feel like one big family, so make sure you enjoy this amazing month.
