It%u2019s an old argument, and the internet has made it more popular than ever, but does our choice of pet really reflect our personality?Dogs are generally thought to be social, energetic, loyal and can be easily trained to follow commands. Cats, however, are self-contained, independent, and difficult to train. There are exceptions in both cases, of course, but these are the general qualities that are mentioned when people compare the two animals.Psychologists have found evidence that pet owners can reflect these qualities: dog owners were also more social, energetic and likely to follow rules than cat owners, who were generally more introverted and unconventional.There%u2019s an element of sexism in the stereotypes, too. US Vice President J.D. Vance caused outrage a couple of years ago when he accused political opponents of being %u201cchildless cat ladies%u201d. The idea of the %u201ccat lady%u201d goes back centuries to when widows living alone would keep cats for company, and was often linked to notions of witchcraft, but nowadays plenty of women have happily reclaimed the %u201ccrazy cat lady%u201d label. What the research also admits is that lifestyle is a strong element of the pet you choose. For example, a family in a large house with plenty of space will find keeping a dog much easier than an individual in a small urban flat. Cats are also relatively lowmaintenance compared to dogs, meaning that a busy person who spends a lot of time out of the house is likely to find a cat easier to keep, while a dog left alone is likely to be an unhappy dog. The other problem with the cat/dog person argument is that it sets up a false binary, insisting that you are either one or the other. In reality, plenty of people like dogs and cats, and have lived happily with both %u2013 often at the same time. Many other people choose to live with fish, hamsters, budgies, snakes or rabbits, but when was the last time you heard someone claiming they were a gerbil person? But both cat and dog owners ideally have one thing in common %u2013 they have taken responsibility for a living creature, and fully committed themselves to its care in return for love, company, fascination and delight. This isn%u2019t always the case %u2013 if it was, our animal shelters would be far less busy. But being a dog person or a cat person doesn%u2019t really matter %u2013 it%u2019s far more important to be a caring, responsible person. %u201cWhen was the last time you met a gerbil person?%u201d
