July 2025 | Gazette Life | 3ContentsEd's letterIf you live on Lanzarote, it can be hard to remember how strange the island can seem to tourists. Most of us will remember the first time we went abroad and what an unusual experience it was. You suddenly find yourself in a place where people talk differently, where the familiar sights and sounds of home have gone or been changed completely. On Lanzarote, you feel that difference straight away as you step out of the plane and into intense heat and light. In a few minutes you%u2019ll see sights, such as cactuses, palm trees and volcanoes %u2013 that are quite unlike what you%u2019re used to. It%u2019s a mild culture shock and can be a little overwhelming, especially for youngsters. So it%u2019s worth remembering that many visitors to the island are experiencing it for the first time. They may be a little unsure and cautious and perhaps not aware of local customs. We should respond with patience and understanding. For example, I often moan when I find myself driving behind tourists who are crawling along in hire cars, but I don%u2019t tailgate, blast my horn or overtake dangerously. A little patience goes a long way and I think that sort of tolerance is one of the island%u2019s strongest virtues: despite the headlines about %u201canti-tourism%u201d protests, Lanzarote remains a welcoming place. Giving people time also allows them to love Lanzarote. Most people come here for sunshine and relaxation. Few will ever have heard of C%u00e9sar Manrique before they arrive, and local culture, food, music and traditions are not really why they booked their holiday here. But thousands of those people will discover these things during their stay. It may be a new dish in a restaurant, tasted nervously before being eaten with relish and re-ordered, it may be a visit to a volcano or an openair concert, but it will be something unexpected that seduces and charms, something that makes them vow to return.Because they do return. On Lanzarote you%u2019re either welcome, or welcome back.
