26 | Gazette Life | August 2025Fresh, cool water is the best drink for hydrating yourself, without a doubt, but it doesn%u2019t always feel that way. Why not? Well, simply put it%u2019s just water, and the sensation of having quenched your thirst is often caused by other ingredients. There can often be a trade-off between drinks that feel refreshing and thirst quenching, and those that actually are. A diuretic, for example, is likely to make you pee and dehydrate you more rapidly in the future, so keep drinking. GAZETTE | FOODWatermelonA beautiful wedge of watermelon is one of the most satisfying thirst quenchers available, and local Canarian sand%u00edas are famously good. Mildly diuretic, they%u2019ll keep your system working well and provide valuable vitamins and antioxidants as well as a sugary energy boost. YoghurtThe Middle East and India know all about the refreshing qualities of yoghurt, using it as a vital ingredient in hot weather drinks such as lassi and ayran. Yoghurt%u2019s fat content, as well as its sodium and potassium levels, can make it genuinely satisfying on a hot day. Try blending equal amounts of yoghurt and cold water with ice, a half teaspoon of salt and some mint leaves for a glass of Turkish ayran. TeaStrangely, a nice hot cuppa can be extremely thirst quenching. Tea contains antioxidants and enough caffeine to stimulate sweat glands, which leads to a welcome cooling effect. Tea is also a mild diuretic, which means that large amounts may keep you peeing, but a cup or two is unlikely to bother you too much. BeerThis is where we%u2019re supposed to warn you that any alcohol is harmful and dehydrating and that beer makes you pee, but all those arguments go out of the window when you%u2019re served with an icecold beer in a frozen glass. Research also supports the fact that a glass or two of beer can be fantastically thirst quenching. It%u2019s basically a trade-off between sensation and reality. Those first mouthfuls of beer feel amazingly satisfying, but the more you drink, the more dehydrated you%u2019ll become.THIRST QUENCHERSOPEN 6 NIGHTS A WEEK MONDAY to SATURDAYINCLUSIVE, FROM 5PM - 11PM(kitchen open till 10pm).
