20 | Gazette Life | August 2025The law in Spain requires simply that dogs and any other animals must be safely secured in order that they cannot interfere with the driver, and also so that they do not turn into a dangerous projectile in the event of an abrupt halt. If you're stopped with a loose dog in your car, expect an immediate fine of at least %u20ac80, rising to %u20ac200 depending on the seriousness of the offence. If the dog is in the front passenger seat, that fine could rise to %u20ac500, and you can forget about your dog sticking its head out of the window while you're driving, despite how cute it is. This is also classed as a lack of control and is a fineable offence. The perfect solution is a car in which the rear is completely separated from the drivers cabin by a partition or grille. You'll often see hunters on the island transporting their animals in such vehicles, but it's probably only worth considering if you transport your pets frequently or have large dogs over 55 kgs in weight. If a dog is kept in such an area, it must still be secured by a harness or, preferably, a large container that is well-secured. A pet carrier or cage is another ideal solution, but it must be securely fastened, and preferably on the floor of the vehicle. If you have a smaller dog under 9 kgs, a pet carrier positioned sideways is the solution advised by Spain's Traffic Department, as their necks aren't strong enough to withstand the whiplash caused by a collision.Another solution is a harness, which must be secured at two points. Simply putting your dog's lead on and tying it to the seat is not enough. Finally, once your dog is secured and you`re about to head to the beach, make sure you're not wearing flip-flops. While this is not illegal in itself, there's a good chance it can be construed as %u201cfootwear unsuitable for controlling a vehicle%u201d by a traffic policeman. The rules for dog beaches on Lanzarote do not exclude cats or other animals, although it's doubtful whether anyone will take their moggy to the beach. But if you do transport cats, make sure they're in a pet transporter, secured sideways in the back seat or unenclosed boot-space.The new dog beach that will soon open in Costa Teguise gives dog owners a chance to exercise their hounds by the seaside, but they'll need to observe road traffic laws if they want to take them there in their cars.PET PASSENGERSGAZETTE | PETSPet Relocation ServiceThis is a monthly service to / from the UK and Mainland EU.We supply large appropriately sized crates within the vehicle and there is no barrier between driver & pets, so constant %u00b4interaction%u00b4 is frequent whilst on the road!
