24 | Gazette Life | November 2025A flash of mother-of-pearl in the moonlight, a gleam of gold or silver in the glow of a candle, an intricately beautiful gift that represents love and tradition, a symbol of status and special occasions %u2013 jewellery is as much a part of Canarian culture as it is in the rest of the world. Jewellery has been found in the very earliest Canarian communities and has been a constant element of the culture of the islands throughout prehistory, conquest and the modern day. The inspiration can be found all around you. There is no gold or silver to be found naturally on the Canaries, no precious gems such as diamonds or rubies. But on Lanzarote, pale green olivina can be seen in many wild places, although its crystals are never large enough to create the gemstones known as peridots (those on sale here are imported). Early natives were attracted by seashells, especially the glossy operculums of sea snails, the mother-of-pearl lining of ormer shells and the pure white rhodolites that resemble popcorn. Early Canarian jewellery found by archaeologists includes necklaces made of seashells, wood, small pebbles, animal and fish bones, and elongated baked clay beads, which would have been dyed or painted and are usually arranged in groups of three of each size and colour. Modern jewellers have adopted these materials and often incorporate the geometric patterns of spirals and triangles found in ancient native pintaderas %u2013 medallions of baked clay that are thought to have also been used as adornments. The arrival of French and Spanish conquistadores brought metalworking to the islands, and jewellers have. The argolla canaria is perhaps the most famous island style, a hoop- style earring in the shape of an extended crescent, with a S-shaped filigree symbol in the centre. Documented since the late 19th century, they have certainly existed for far longer and are traditional family heirlooms in many Canarian families.Nowadays, Lanzarote offers a wide and tempting range of jewellery, from exquisite selections imported to the island and sold in jewellers in the resorts and larger towns, to original creations by resident jewellers that can be found in craft markets in Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Har%u00eda and in Teguise%u2019s market.Discovering these gorgeous items is a joy in itself.GAZETTE | BEAUTYThe joy ofNEW SHOP NOW OPEN IN TEGUISEArtistic jewelleryEthically sourced, inspired by Lanzarote,Shaped by hand.We are delighted to welcome you into our Gallery CIAN.Calle Le%u00f3n y Castillo 6,35530 Teguise.SCAN THIS QR FOR WHERE TO FIND USJewels
