Doves can often be seen nesting in the high inner walls, and you may spot one of the ravens that gave the volcano its name. it%u2019s a place to pause, enjoy and reflect on the immense forces that created this landscape in a matter of days. Leaving the crater, you can choose to carry on around the volcano. This is a hypnotic trail, where you%u2019ll see huge cracks in the ground, gloopy solidified lava swirls and vast plains of lava with views of the silent volcanoes of Timanfaya on the horizon. Pause for a moment and try and imagine the fields of wheat and barley, the green pastures where goats once grazed, and the little villages that once existed here %u2013 it%u2019s almost impossible to do. The earth suddenly opened and swallowed them up in rivers of fire.What is left is one of the most starkly beautiful landscapes in Europe, a place that inspires awe, a little fear and an odd blend of tranquillity, acceptance and hope. The French novelist Michel Houellebecq once wrote about the volcanic landscapes of Timanfaya: %u201cThis is what the end of the world looks like%u201d.
