February 2026 | Gazette Life | 7The new bus station in Costa Teguise will run over a quarter of a million Euros over budget, owing to the increased cost of materials.Originally contracted for a cost of %u20ac2.36 million, the revised figure now stands at %u20ac2.61 million.The bus station is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2026 after works commenced in 2024. It will be a base of operation for buses and taxis, with an information point and a cafeteria. There will also be some parking spaces, charging points for electric vehicles and areas adapted for the disabled.COSTA TEGUISE BUS STATION RUNS A QUARTER OF A MILLION OVER BUDGET Pope Leo XIV has expressed an intention to visit the Canaries later this year as part of a broader Spanish visit.The Vatican had announced that Pope Leo intends to fulfil the pledge made by his predecessor, Pope Francisco, to visit Spain and the Canaries, which was unable to be fulfilled before his death last year.Details of the visit are as yet unresolved, but Leo is likely to visit the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, as well as Madrid and, most probably, one or both of the larger Canary Islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The choice of the islands is related to recent Papal statements of compassion and support for migrants.The Navilan Christmas fair in Arrecife concluded its 2025/26 edition with resounding success, welcoming more than 160,000 visitors.Arrecife Council claims that the fair also boosted seasonal employment, with more than 250 people engaged in a multitude of roles to bring the venue to life over its 20-day run. They estimate that the event raised profits of approximately 15 million euros.The figures were achieved despite weather POPE LEO XIV TO VISIT CANARY ISLANDSNAVILAN WELCOMED OVER 160,000 VISITORS LAST CHRISTMAS The Cabildo has launched a new bus link directly connecting the island%u2019s communities to the Doctor Jos%u00e9 Molina Orosa Hospital. The new 4H bus route connects the hospital with the hubs of the Arrecife Interchange and Arrecife%u2019s main bus station, where passengers from other areas of the island can change.The line began operating on January 2nd and runs Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Buses depart every 25 minutes. The first service starts at 7:30 am, with the final departure at 9:25 pm.LANZAROTE CABILDO LAUNCHES NEW BUS ROUTE TO GENERAL HOSPITALPASSENGERS FORCED TO SLEEP ON FLOOR AT LANZAROTE AIRPORT Passengers were forced to sleep on the floor of Arrecife%u2019s airport on Saturday 3rd January as flights were held up by bad weather.Passengers boarded the Manchesterbound Jet2.com flight at 9.15, one hour after its scheduled departure. However, after remaining on the tarmac for four hours, the pilot informed passengers that the flight had been cancelled.As the airline could only find lastminute accommodation for a few passengers, many had to remain in the terminal. They were given a %u20ac20 food voucher but were unable to use it until shops opened in the morning.The flight finally left Lanzarote at around midday on Sunday 4th.conditions, with Lanzarote experiencing its coldest, wettest December for several years.
