February 2026 | Gazette Life | 3ContentsEd's letterYour first arrival on Lanzarote is unforgettable. I remember seeing the volcanoes from my window seat, white houses dotted over black lava and that final swoop down past Matagorda, before stepping out of the plane into instant sunshine and warmth and seeing the impressive cactuses opposite the arrivals area. Most tourists arrive at Lanzarote after a nervous trip to their airport, a couple of hours checking in and waiting and four or five hours in the air. They are as exhausted as they are excited and just need to get to their accommodation, shower and rest a little. What they absolutely don%u2019t need is a long wait in a queue for their passports to be checked, followed by another long wait for a taxi outside. This can sometimes add another couple of hours to the trip, and it%u2019s no surprise that tempers sometimes fray. Queues have been occurring for well over 18 months now, caused by shortage of border agents and, presumably, the recent introduction of the new EES scheme. I%u2019m fed up of receiving letters about the long waits that people, often disabled or with children, but always tired and angry, have had to endure on arrival. We hear all the time about how tourism is booming and how more money is being left on the island, but this is not being accompanied by improvement in the basic services that affect every arrival to the island. Despite frequent promises that things will improve soon, authorities are failing to %u201cfix the roof while the sun is shining.%u201d It%u2019s not good enough. We can argue whether there are too many tourists on Lanzarote all we like, but there%u2019s no excuse for treating them badly or neglecting them. They may choose to holiday elsewhere after a bad experience on Lanzarote, or they may not; tourist income may be affected or it may not, but that isn%u2019t the issu %u2013 it%u2019s a question of basic respect. Our cover stars Dylan and Conor Donegan are interviewed on pg 40.
