26 | Gazette Life | February 2026Love Island!Lanzarote is the perfect place to celebrate Valentine%u2019s Day - an island of enchantment, beauty and wild romance.Lanzarote%u2019s contribution to love and romance is not usually recognised by the tourist publicity for the island, but it%u2019s an essential part of the island%u2019s appeal. All over the island there are hundreds of couples (and many more families) who would not even exist without holiday romances that turned into something more serious. At any of the resorts you%u2019ll also find fences and railings festooned with love locks. Many people think these are an eyesore, but every single one is an expression of love and a sign that Lanzarote is a very special place for thousands of people. Films set on Lanzarote have long recognised the romance of the island. French director Eric Rohmer came here to film the %u201cGreen Ray%u201d %u2013 a flash of green light that appears on the horizon at sunset and which legend says will seal a bond between two lovers who witness it. Pedro Almod%u00f3var also set his tragic romance Broken Embraces on the island, while Rafael Arozarena%u2019s novel about Marar%u00eda, the beauty from Fem%u00e9s who won the heart of an Englishman and a Spanish doctor, was also made into a wonderfully romantic film. A statue to Marar%u00eda can be found at the viewpoint in Fem%u00e9s. This year, Valentine%u2019s Day falls on a Saturday, meaning that couples will be able to devote their weekend to this special occasion. Although this month is one of the quieter ones on the island, it%u2019s well worth booking a table in advance for your special date. There are plenty of places that offer a perfect Valentines evening experience, from Jameos del Agua to El Golfo, and although there won%u2019t be much moonlight on the 14th, there%u2019s bound to be a sunset. Meanwhile, the rural areas of the island are likely to be at their greenest and most beautiful following the winter rains. If you%u2019re looking for that special gift, the island offers plenty of opportunities, from unique and beautiful items of jewellery to fine wine and hand-made chocolates. Many Saint%u2019s days are celebrated on Lanzarote, but only one is as universally celebrated throughout the world as Valentine%u2019s Day, which is also one of the oldest celebrations in Europe %u2013 a testament to the enduring and all-powerful power of love and romance.
