Building materials have been imported to Lanzarote for almost as long as the island has been in contact with mainland Europe. In centuries gone by, wood was the most important material, and virtually every wooden feature you see on Lanzarote, from the ancient beams in traditional houses to modern doors and fittings, will have arrived by boat. The same applies to steel, aluminium and glass, none of which have ever been produced on the island, and the tiny clay deposits on the island mean that bricks are impossible to produce. But what Lanzarote does have in abundance is rocks. Older buildings were often constructed with these stones, using techniques similar to dry-stone walling. They would be built around a wooden frame and finished with plaster and lime, which was also one of the island%u2019s main products. Later, more intensive quarrying of the island%u2019s basalt provided stone blocks for building purposes.
