76 | Gazette Life | March 2026GAZETTE | GARDENINGAfter the winter rains, there is no better time than now for gardeners to leave their plots and discover the wild beauty of Lanzarote, drinking in inspiration, ideas and knowledge that can only improve their own little piece of the island. BARRANCOSA barranco is ravine which channels rainfall to the sea. Lanzarote has several, and all of them will have been well-soaked over the wet winter months. The Barranco del Higueral leads from the mountain top overlooking Fem%u00e9s down to the sea and is part of the oldest rock formation on the Life everywhere island. It%u2019s a stunning walk, and at this time of year you%u2019re likely to spot wild melons, as well as many other species. The island%u2019s most beautiful and spectacular barrancos, however, are in the north of the island. The Barranco de Teng%u00fcime, between Guatiza and the wind turbines on the heights of Los Valles, explodes into life after the rains, while the Barranco de Chafar%u00eds, near Har%u00eda, is one of the greenest parts of the island. FAMARA%u2019S CLIFFSThe cliffs of Famara are Lanzarote%u2019s most varied eco-system, the site of greatest botanical diversity on the island and home to around 700 species of plant, 20 of which are found nowhere else in the world. There%u2019s no need to tackle the cliff face itself, just take a walk along the cliff at the Hermita de las Nieves, El Bosquecillo, Monta%u00f1a Gayo or Las Rositas near Y%u00e9, and you%u2019ll see more than enough impressive greenery. In 2007, the Cabildo published a book called Las Plantas Aut%u00f3ctonas de Lanzarote. Su uso en jardiner%u00eda (Indigenous Plants of Lanzarote. Their use in Gardening), which is a vital resource for anyone interested in local fauna. The book is freely available online and, although it is in Spanish, the translation apps on modern smartphones should be able to translate it well enough.%u2022 Maintenance for communities, hotels, private homes, etc.%u2022 Design, creation and maintenance of all types of garden (small and large)%u2022 Swimming pools maintenancewww.mandragoragarden.com %u2022 mandragoragarden@yahoo.es %u2022 Tel.: 659 81 27 53%u2022 Tree and palm pruning%u2022 Installation of automatic watering system%u2022 Low maintenance gardens %u2022 Cleaning of fincas and garden maintenance %u2022 Construction and design of barbeques, Thai beds, benches, paths, entrances, fountains, terraces, etc.%u2022 SPECIALISTS IN NATURAL & HIGH QUALITY ARTIFICIAL GRASS
