This generally isn%u2019t important in dry, warm weather, but when it gets cooler and wetter, damp can be a serious problem and can result in unpleasant outbreaks of mould on walls. It%u2019s often found in north-facing rooms where the exterior fa%u00e7ade is permanently in the shade and can also be a problem in lowlying regions near the coast, as groundwater from the sea can seep into cellars and basements. Roof leaks after rainfall are also a big problem, allowing moisture to enter in the first place. A serious leak can be a real headache, damaging furniture, books and other possessions permanently.Damp can be spotted by looking out for peeling or blistering paintwork, crusty white salt deposits, a musty smell and, of course, the appearance of mould. If a window frequently suffers from condensation, there%u2019s also a risk of damp in the brickwork.Ventilation is one of the main tips to avoiding mould- allowing air to pass through the room regularly and removing obstacles that prevent wind from drying the exterior of the room. But once damp is established, it can be a lot harder to eliminateTreatment with a fungicide and a thorough job of repainting is one way of tackling the problem, but it%u2019s not a permanent solution, and the issue of ventilation will need to be addressed to stave off future problems.Efficient waterproofing of roofs, windows and doors will also help keep moisture out, and in drastic cases a damp course can even be installed In many cases it may be necessary to call in the experts.
