72 | Gazette Life | August 2025A SPEED CAMERA ON LANZAROTE HAS GENERATED MORE FINES THAN ANY OTHER IN THE CANARY ISLANDS, AND IS ONE OF THE TOP 15 EARNERS IN SPAIN.The radar trap in question is located at the 20 km point of the LZ-67, close to the roundabout and underpass at Yaiza, and it has issued more than 25,000 denuncias last year, more than eight times the 3,000 in 2023.The speed limit on the LZ-67 is 60 kph, as the road is classified as a cycling route, and it is indeed used by hundreds of cyclists every week. However, it is also one of the most beautiful roads on the island %u2013 a ribbon of asphalt through a volcanic wasteland that has been repeatedly used in publicity photos and advertising campaigns. It%u2019s maybe this tempting prospect that lures drivers to put the pedal down, but thousands have regretted it. Another reason for the high rate of fines could be that this road is extremely popular with tourists, while locals tend to avoid it in the Tinajo direction during the daytime, as there are frequently long queues to enter the Fire Mountains. Tourists, of course, are perfectly capable of seeing the 60 kph speed limit posted on the roadside, but the vias ciclistas (cycling routes) remain an exception to the 90 kph speed limit that generally applies on standard twolane roads in Spain. That%u2019s because they are roads that are intended for the use of both motor vehicles and cyclists (and are also routes where tourists often pass). As a result, a lower speed limit is imposed.Similar rules exist on the LZ-30 through the La Geria wine growing area, and on the alternative roads adjacent to the main roads between Yaiza and Playa Blanca and SPEED TRAPSGAZETTE | MOTORINGTahiche and Guatiza. However, in the last two cases, there are clear alternatives for a motorist in a hurry to use. That%u2019s also the case for the LZ-702 between the Camel roundabout near Uga and Playa Blanca, but on this road the decision has been taken to ban cyclists completely from one of the most scenic routes on the island. If you want to visit Fem%u00e9s, you%u2019ll have to find a motor vehicle or hike it.
