August 2025 | Gazette Life | 37A holiday on Lanzarote isn't the same without a voyage. This is an island surrounded by the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, and it's a shame not to take advantage of it.Lanzarote is a maritime island, a place where boats, sailing and fishing have been vital elements of life for centuries. If you ever doubted it, head to any of its coastal towns at full tide to see boats tugging merrily at their moorings, then go to the commercial port near Arrecife and observe how almost everything we eat, wear, or use arrives in colourful containers. Few of us remember details of the flights we take to Lanzarote or coach trips around the island, but a sea voyage is always an adventure, something that remains fresh in the memory years later. Why is this? Could it be the glitter of sunshine on blue-green water, the sea spray in the air, or that unique rocking motion that often stays with you hours after you've stepped ashore? Whatever it is, it's an experience in itself, often just as important as the destination.ON THEOn Lanzarote you can get that feeling in many ways. If you're in Puerto del Carmen, why not turn a trip to Puerto Calero into a proper day out by combining a clifftop walk with a journey on the water taxi, which will give an entirely different viewpoint.Or you could hop onto the ferry to Corralejo in Fuerteventura, watching the waves for the heart-stopping sight of flying fish launching themselves into the air and skimming above the waves for long distances. There's no need to take a car unless you're planning a longer trip to our neighbouring island, but Corralejo is definitely worth a wander. Then there's La Graciosa, the eighth Canary Island. The ferry to this unspoilt isle is one of the most spectacular the island has to offer, with stunning views of the Famara cliffs. It can get a little choppy if the wind is up, but the boats are entirely safe and are piloted by skippers with a lifetime of experience. There are also plenty of opportunities to hire a private charter and just head to wherever you fancy, often with the food and drink included in the price.Waves
