The Ska Duo is made up of Anthony Cummins on vocals and saxophone and Julie Helliwell on trombone and vocals.
They offer a lively set full of all the old Ska favourites from Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners, plus many more!
Having met whilst playing with The Skatoons, Tony and Julie decided to form The Ska Duo at the beginning of 2019, with their first gig at the end of February. They play regularly around the island, and have just recorded theirdebut album which is on sale at their gigs.
They’ve got many years’ experience of playing the saxophone and trombone, and have a great time performing together as a duo, which is evident when you watch them. A Ska Duo gig is a lot of fun, and even if you think you don’t know much Ska music, you’d be surprised. You’ll probably know some of the classics including Baggy Trousers, House of Fun, Our House and Ghost Town. It’s music that you’re guaranteed to tap your feet to, and you may even feel compelled to join the others on the dance floor!
But what is Ska music?
Ska is a Jamaican genre that originated in the 1950s, and was the precursor to reggae. It combines both Caribbean mento and calypso, with jazz and blues. Ska songs are almost always followed by a walking bass line, accompanied by off beat rhythms.
